Best Little Bribes of KC
Much of my coffeehouse exploring happens during my commute to work on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Over the last year and a half since I started this mission, I have covered a lot of ground, mostly in the urban corridor, as that’s where I’ve traveled to and from work. However, this pattern will be changing in just a few months- my commute will go from 20 miles to 2 blocks, so most of my T/R morning coffees will be at Eljay’s and City Market Coffeehouse. That just means I’ll have to make more of an effort to hit the suburbs to keep bringing you good shops we hadn’t heard of before. That, or …. just read a pretty little book??
Yes, if you’ve been to many shops in town, you’ve probably seen the book I’m talking about. The Best Little Coffee Shops in Kansas City. It certainly is a pretty little book. It has full-page color photos of some of the more interesting little places in town. Many of their top picks I agree with; YJ’s Snack Shop, for example.
However, there are also a couple picks I contend with. Some may write this off to a difference of opinion, as I was inclined to. Not everybody loves The Crave Cafe like I do. That’s fine by me. But then I heard a nasty rumor from a shop owner. They claimed that the author approached local shops and asked for money in exchange for being named one of the ‘best little shops in KC.’ It should be disclosed that this shop in question was not included in the book, so this is entirely hearsay. Should the author catch wind of this post and wish to defend themselves, be my guest. I’m just repeating what I heard.
So, long story short, if you want a pretty coffee table book (about coffee), this book is great. But if you want an honest list of the top shops, you need look no further than KC Perky’s own Top Ten Coffee List.
