Homer’s Coffee isn’t as far away as say, Daily Dose, but it is still a decent trip down to 80th and Metcalf down in Overland Park, but I’m glad I did. I had no clue there was a second coffeehouse book in KC (beyond TBLCSIKC). Yes, yes, Jim wrote this book about his motivations, obstacles, successes, and general process of opening a coffee shop.
Saving the World One Latte at a Time: The Story of Homer’s Coffee House. Now, before you go reading it, you should learn one thing about Homer’s- it is much like Planet Cafe in the fact that it is a Christian-themed coffee shop that is not physically attached to a church at all. That kinda explains the title as well as much of the how/why that you’d read in the book. Its not that there are crucifixes on the wall or anything crazy, heathens can enjoy good coffee here too.
So on to the coffee and the shop. My standard mocha was SUPER sweet, couldn’t really taste the coffee part. We’re talkin hot chocolate level here. With marshmallows. And a half cup of splenda. If you like that kind of thing, great. Me, I’d rather chug syrup. The layout shop is open and inviting. It has a nice little raised stage where (Christian) bands frequent. About 1/3 of the tables have outlets available for all of your laptop power needs. It also has one of my favorite coffee shop features: sofas. 1 sofa, 1 loveseat, crucial for going on a coffee date. However, I’m not sure what the element Homer’s is that its missing, it just doesn’t feel home-y enough for me to relax in. Maybe it needs more heathens.
All in all, not one my favorite shops, but definitely a solid choice if you’re in the area.
