When I Drink Alone…
…I prefer to not be by myself. Sorry, Mr. Thorogood. I prefer to feel that I’m in the thick of it. Watching the world go by with a coffee and a book in hand is a fun thing, and there’s no better place to do it than KC’s reviving downtown areas. I’m talking particularly today, of 12th and Main.
I believe I may have happened upon the best spot in KC for this: the far, back corner of the Starbucks in the City Center Square. This corner has a comfy chair. This comfy chair has a window. This window is great for watching the world. I would recommend it to you, but then you might end up sitting there when I want it. I’m not sure I can handle that.
“But Scott, we thought you detested Starbucks?!”
No, not really. I just don’t choose to promote them much, they’re kind of the Walmart of coffee shops. However, much like Walmart, they’re working hard to lose that big bad-guy image. For instance, they just closed all US locations for 3 hours last Tuesday for training and instituted 3 major changes. Most of these practices they learned are standard fare at small shops, so its encouraging to see Starbucks returning to what really matters: quality workmanship of their coffee. One of the other things Starbucks is hoping to return to is the feeling of community their early shops had. It will be interesting to see how they try to mandate corporate change that encourages local community. I foresee barista puppet shows.

Shameless plug… if you’re looking for a good place downtown to watch the world go by, I’d recommend Scooter’s at 9th/Walnut… the big surfboard table next to the door is the perfect spot for that (even if it’s right underneath a vent), plus the guys who sling the brew are pretty nice. (If S’bucks is the Wal-Mart of coffee, I’d put them as the Target.)
