Sing a New Song

Songbird cafe: longshot

Finally!  A new shop to really get excited about.  Songbird Cafe.

Songbird cafe: Wall detail

Hiding in the Fairfax District of Kansas City, KS for the last 4 months, Songbird Cafe seems to have brought the spirit of YJ’s Snack Shop to ‘The Other KC’.  Don’t get me wrong, The Q Brew in KCK is an endearing shop of its own accord, but its not a place I’d cross over for.  What aspects of YJ’s spirit do I see reflected in Songbird?  The non-assuming feel of the shop.  The lunch menu with just one meal on it per day (today: BBQ pulled pork).  The friendly-as-get-out service.  The clientele are real people too, not your average coffee-shop junkies (… you know, like me).

Courtney was my barista today, and I gather she’s the barista every day (Phillip made my sandwich).  As she made my shot from the hand-pull fully manual espresso machine, she informed me they get their beans from Broadway Roasting Company- always a good choice in this city.  I’ve never had espresso from a fully manual machine before.  The mocha itself was  average, but I appreciate the fact that there is variability when its made by hand.  The breakfast croisant sandwich was solid as well.

Recommendation: add this joint to your rotation.  Its really easy to get to and from the shop via I-70, the bird kitch & art is endearing and the people are great.

Come back in and I’ll make sure to make you an awesome mocha! :)

I learned on a completely manual machine and that is still the way I prefer to make espresso. Sure, it takes a little longer, but it feels more like a craft to me that way.
