A Great Place to Work

Hi you coffee and tea fans!  I know I’ve been lax in my blogging duties… to be honest it’s been a little intimidating.  I decided to kick off my first blog with a place I really like, even if it’s a coffee place mostly.

Dunn Bros Coffee is a nice place to chill, fortunately for me it’s also a great place to work.  Since I work for myself, I’m always on the look out for a free wi-fi connection, quite music, and a good cup of tea to settle myself into an afternoon’s work.  Dunn Bros Coffee has that and more in their two locations (8975 Metcalf & 535 E Red Bridge Rd).  I prefer the Metcalf location with more room and tray tables for the comfy chairs, but the Red Bridge location is doing quite a business as well.

Dunn Bros Coffee also roasts their own coffee on site in small batches every day.  This affords you fantastic quality and freshness, whether you are having a cup in the store or buying beans to take home to your own Bistro.  Being a “Tea Chick” myself, I did not partake in the roasted goodness, but got a favorable report from the friend that I met there.  The tea while not being loose leaf is made by Mighty Leaf and tastes pretty good.  You might have to take the quality into your own hands however, since Dunn Bros like most coffee shops does not understand what it takes to brew a truly great cup of tea.  I’ve included some pointers below to help you out.

Tea is a beverage that requires a specific brewing temperature and time to be it’s best.  Most of us have had a bad cup of tea that either tastes bitter or weak.  Bitterness is the result of the tea being brewed too hot or too long.  Weakness is a tea brewed too cool or  not long enough.  My general rule of thumb is to only order black teas or herbal teas when I’m at a coffee shop.  White and green teas are too delicate and require a much lower brewing temperature that is harder to achieve, unless you can tell the difference between 160 degrees to 212 degrees at a glance.  Here is a fairly simple guide for your home use on the different teas and the temperatures and times they require for steeping:  http://coffeetea.about.com/od/teabrewing/a/teatemp.htm.  Tea is not intimidating if you keep the tip of black or herbal teas only when you’re out and about!  More great tea info to come soon!

    Great tips on tea preparation.

If I recall, Muddy’s on 51st street has free wi-fi and carries loose teas, but they don’t time them or adjust the temperature.

I think the Filling Station has loose teas, as well.

Eljay’s, occupying the old Cup and Saucer space, has free wi-fi, and they carry nice loose teas, and they portion them, time them, and adjust the temperature on the water for them.

I agree with you on Dunn Bros. on Metcalf…I’ve had great service and they do have comfy chairs! The fireplace is a bonus.

Eljay’s is great for the wi-fi since they provide a pw for you to have a bit more privacy on line then other places.

the only thing I hate hate hate when I do go to this place is that the barista’s when they steam milk, they slam the wand to the bottom of the pitcher and it makes a awful scream sound. I want to yell at them “STOP IT! you don’t need to steam the pitcher!” Common now, steam the milk not the pitcher. lol.
