Openings all over
Looks like the coffee economy is picking up a bit! More new places to try:
Phil’s on 63rd (where Max’s Autodiner used to be)
Petra Coffeehouse in Raytown
The Steamin Bean in Blue Springs
Zombie Joe’s is still in a holding pattern on opening, but they have bumper stickers!
And of course, all those places in Waldo are getting rolling, particularly One More Cup
A place out in San Fran, Trouble Coffee, has been serving an interesting drink, Cold Press Coffee. Any baristas around here up to try to make it for us? If so, hit back in the comments and we’ll come try it:
…cold press coffee which is ground espresso beans soaked for 24 hours and hand-mixed three times & then all the grounds settle & you’re left with this rather amazing, never warmed mellow drink. Almost a liquor in flavor. Strong as shit.
And last but not least, by total surprise, The OC Register (newspaper in LA) put us on the short list of coffee shop websites. Let’s hear it for KC getting cred! Whoo hoo!
And now, with no reason to mention them other than I like them:
Black Dog Coffeehouse.

I actually blogged about this awhile back. I learned the cold press process years ago as a barista in college in Minneapolis.
There are a few places locally you can get a true iced coffee (not that glorified slurpee crap) and they include some surprises:
Scooter’s (decent)
Caribou (passable)
Dunn Bros. on Metcalf (best)
Not sure about any locally owned spots. Usually when I ask for an iced coffee they either a)look at me blankly and tell me they don’t have frappacino machines b) pour an americano over ice (nasty).

Yes! We just made our first batch of cold press coffee this week! This is Stacy from One More Cup by the way. We are making it from our blend, and should have it available regularly. It is available plain iced or au lait iced.

We make cold-brewed coffee at Eljay’s, and while we mostly use it as a concentrate, we’d be glad to customize it for you.
Actually, you’d be surprised by the number of coffeeshops that have been making cold-pressed coffee for awhile. Most of them have slightly different methods, but it’s often there. However, I do know that at a lot of them, unless you say the magic words “cold-press” or “toddy,” if you want iced coffee you will get coffee over ice.

Roasterie will make toddy. I don’t prefer toddy myself. I’m old school. HA!
