I've been in there enough to be the Foursquare mayor (woop de doo :)) and work right down the street. I'd say the service has improved from Eljay's - that service was way, way too slow for a coffee shop. K.City has decent speed, but the charm/personality could definitely be kicked up a notch.

The paninis are DELICIOUS - I was not expecting anything near as good as that thing was. I need to go back and have another soon.

I'm not much of a coffee drinker so can't comment as to that quality - I almost always get a Chai Tea Latte when I go and that's been pretty good.

Unfortunately, the fact that they are only open Monday-Friday, 7-2 virtually ensures that I will never, ever go there.

My regular coffee shop day is Sunday, sometimes Saturday. I like to socialize at coffee shops and sit for hours talking to friends... which necessitates weekend hours. Too bad. :-(

I love, Love, LOVED the Planet and I am very sorry that it is gone. I was excited to see Coffee Wonk open in its place, but it will take some hard work and time for it to reach the level of greatness that the Planet was at one time (under Nicole's ownership).

I admit that I too have walked in to Coffee Wonk in the morning and caught the barista sleeping -- I just walked out and decided I would have to get coffee later. Micah is super friendly and treats me well when I go there. I used to drink fancy lattes and espresso drinks at the Planet, but at Coffee Wonk I only go for brewed coffee or an Americano. The brewed coffee has always been quite good. If you don't like something about it and you tell Micah, he will fix it for you or change the brew - no big deal.

I'd love to have the warmth, charm, and level of business that the Planet brought back again... I'm waiting. Coffee Wonk is not an everyday stop for me, but in the middle of the day when I really need a coffee fix, they are close by and the brew is good. Not giving up on them yet.

I would whole-heartedly agree that it is a seedy place but then again so was the Planet when they first opened up.It takes time to build. As for warmth-there is no way that we could replace the Planet. It was not just a coffee shop but a safe space for the gay and lesbian community in the metro and more importantly it's surrounding suburbs.I was introduced to it by a closeted friend and supported them for that very reason. Most of the time I got great service but occasionally I was greeted with outright contempt.Having worked in the service industry,I have empathy for anyone in that field and generally let it slide. And being a straight, white, male,I figure being treated poorly every once in awhile by those that are routinely and systematically oppressed on a daily basis is nothing to complain about.I know this has nothing to do with coffee but that's not why I'm here and that's not why I went to the Planet.I can however say that thanks to youtube,I now make a pretty good cup of java. And the owner no longer experiments with black tea but I think that's just because we ran out.

I've visited Coffee Wonk around 3-4 times and on all occasions my experience was great. The cofee was awsome, and the k2 inscent was quality. A must try stop for the cofee drinker and/or inscent lover.

kind of a seedy looking place. doesn't have the warmth of the Planet.
the owner experiments with coffee mixes; even mixed black tea in the coffee beans. (not particulary good)

Dave has reopened between 11th and 12th on Oak. Under the parking garage and under a different name this time. Place seems a lot more... well just a lot more. A search on case net shows a lot of people after this guy so I don't know how long he'll last.

This coffee shop is a great place to come with friend at any hour of the day. I have made close friendships with the baristas who have given me a place to hang out whether I have money or not. They are also helping to break down the stereotypes that one might have about homosexuals and the homeless in kansas city. By treating them as people, not as freaks or wierdos like the one horse town minded people of the midwest seem to think of them as. They also give musicians and writers a place to hone thier craft free of judgement. I have nothing, but good things to say about this shop that is making Kansas City a better place to live one cup at a time twenty four hours a day.

I would have to strongly disagree with many of the negative comments here. I think this coffee shop is cool. I'm a dire coffee lover as is my truelove Donna.
We KNOW good coffee from bad. Sure the Broadway cafe has good coffee too, but unlike "the wonk" down the street it just feels too cramped to me. I should also note for those who read my Proud to be Catholic blog, yes, this is where most of it is typed up these days. If the place was dirty or the servers mean, do you honestly think I'd come? I come because I feel that Coffee Wonk is a REAL coffee shop. Keep in mind my blog was in existence long before the wonk opened, so I know my other options. As long as they keep up their hard work I will continue to cater to this independent local business, besides, they're within walking distance of my home!
